Harry Carey Junior est né à 1 heure du matin, le 16 mai 1921, dans une vieille bâtisse sans électricité. Sa mère avait demandé que quelqu’un aille placer la camionnette devant la fenêtre, tous phares allumés, pour que le médecin puisse voir un peu ce qu’il « fabriquait ». Pendant ce temps, dans une pièce attenante, Harry Carey Senior et John Ford fêtaient avec force rasades de « whiskey » la venue du nouveau-né ! Après une telle naissance « fordienne », il était, somme toute, naturel que le jeune Harry travaillât un jour avec John Ford. « Tu travailleras avec LUI, pas avant que je claque, mais alors, tu joueras dans ses films », lui avait prédit son père, lui-même ancien acteur de Ford de 1917 à 1919 dans vingt-deux films muets et, en 1936, dans Je n’ai pas tué Lincoln. John Wayne, grand admirateur de H. Carey senior, lui rendra par deux fois hommage, dans la Chevauchée fantastique lors du règlement de compte final, lui empruntant sa démarche et son port de fusil dans Straight Shooting et dans la Prisonnière du désert en reproduisant une attitude familière de « Cheyenne Harry », sa main droite saisissant son bras gauche à hauteur du coude. Un moment de grande émotion pour l’épouse et le fils également acteurs dans ce film. Il n’est donc pas anecdotique, qu’au soir d’une carrière bien remplie par plus de cent films et séries télé, H. Carey consacre ce beau livre de souvenirs essentiellement aux neuf titres qu’il tourna sous la direction du vieux maître, ainsi qu’aux acteurs qui formaient autour de lui une véritable troupe. Comme il est significatif et révélateur que ce livre porte en sous-titre : « My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company », sachant que « stock » renvoie, aux États-Unis, à la notion de bétail, de cheptel, comme nous le rappelle l’excellent traducteur Frédéric Pieretti. Du Fils du désert en 1949, aux Cheyennes en 1964, nous suivons H. Carey apprenant durement son métier d’acteur sous la férule de celui qu’il nommait, soit le vieux salopard, soit oncle Jack, jurant après chaque film qu’il ne tournerait plus pour lui et, rentré à la maison, tremblant d’espoir à chaque sonnerie du téléphone : « c’est LUI qui m’appelle, pour un nouveau rôle ! » H. Carey nous fait revivre avec un bonheur teinté de nostalgie toute une époque à jamais révolue, l’ambiance à la fois chaleureuse et rigoureuse des tournages de Ford, dressant de celui-ci un portrait loin de toute hagiographie ; un Ford tyrannique et paternaliste, chaleureux avec les sans-grade et les techniciens, impitoyable, capable d’une véritable cruauté mentale avec les acteurs principaux comme d’un métier jamais pris en défaut. Travailler avec John Ford, c’est aussi côtoyer « ses » acteurs dont bien évidemment John Wayne et Ward Bond. H. Carey nous décrit de grands professionnels, qui craignent pourtant les colères du « vieux ». Cette grande gueule de W. Bond acceptait sans sourciller d’être le souffre-douleur attitré de Ford. Wayne et Bond, connus pour leurs opinions que l’on qualifiera pour le moins de réactionnaires, étaient les plus chaleureux des compagnons de travail. Le libéral qu’est H. Carey précise qu’il a toujours soigneusement évité toute conversation politique avec eux, et nous rappelle, comme incidemment, que pendant le tournage de la Charge héroïque, ils étaient les seuls de tout le plateau, lui et Ford, ce dernier contrairement aux idées reçues, à voter démocrate. H. Carey, grand second rôle, rend modestement hommage aux cascadeurs, aux acteurs, aux « grands » qu’il a côtoyés, regrettant que John Wayne n’ait pas reçu l’oscar qu’il méritait pour sa composition dans la Prisonnière du désert , ce « chef-d’oeuvre » auquel il est légitimement fier d’avoir participé. Ceux qui aiment le cinéma américain de l’âge d’or, et singulièrement les westerns de Ford, doivent se procurer ce livre bel et bon, pour mieux se souvenir de leur genèse et de tous ceux qui y contribuèrent, pour un bonheur sans cesse renouvelé

Campfire Conversations: Deluxe Centennial Edition is a reedited and reprinted compilation of Tim's 1992 Campfire Conversations: Big Trail Interviews with Some of John Wayne's Coworkers which has been out of print for over a decade. In addition to the 12 original interviews, Tim has added select conversations from the other titles in this series -- Campfires Rekindled, Campfire Embers, and Campfire's Glow -- along with interviews with such worthy costars as Maureen O'Hara and Jim Burk which he did after the Campfire series ended in the 1990s. Two brand new conversations with Ethan and Patrick Wayne, brings the total number of participants in this "Best of.." volume to 28.

Tim Lilley as interviewer and editor of these volumes, has devoted much of his adult life to bringing information and joy to the fans of John Wayne. These volumes were originally intended for the readers of The Big Trail: A Newsletter of the Films of John Wayne. This publication was put out by Tim bi-monthly from 1984 until 1999 when he changed to an annual publication titled The Trail Beyond which is published in December of each year with Volume 8 published in December 2006. Our hope is that it will continue for many years to come.

This volume is the first book published in hard cover from Big Trail Publishing and it was published in celebration of the 100th anniversary of John Wayne's birth.
